Mike holds a BS Degree from California State University, Fullerton, with a dual major in Real Estate Finance and Industrial Marketing. His professional journey spans over 40 years in commercial real estate and the mortgage industry, where he has built a reputation for integrity and success.

Political Experience

Mike is currently serving his third term as Mayor of Aliso Viejo, Mike has been a council member for 12 years. His leadership extends beyond Aliso Viejo, having served on various regional bodies including the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Agency, Southern California Association of Governments, and as a Director on the Orange County Republican Party’s Central Committee.

Living in Aliso Viejo with his wife Erin for 17 years, Mike has not only been involved in local politics but has been a steadfast community member. His commitment to Aliso Viejo is evident in his numerous contributions:

  • Stopped the Green City Initiative in 2013, saving millions for the city.
  • Preserved the Moulton Ranch by opposing the Boys and Girls Club development, leading to the creation of the beautiful Aliso Viejo Ranch.
  • Developed policies that balance the needs of businesses and residents, like the Open House Sign policy and supporting Edwards Theater’s alcohol sales.
  • Fought against Measure G, a school bond that would have burdened property owners with significant costs.
  • Enhanced local infrastructure by ensuring the preservation of the SOCWA bridge, protecting community safety and traffic flow.
  • Addressed local issues like sober living homes and homelessness through effective legislation.

Vision for Aliso Viejo

Mike’s vision is clear: to continue fostering a safe, thriving community where businesses flourish and residents enjoy a high quality of life. His experience in real estate and finance has directly benefited Aliso Viejo through strategic development and fiscal responsibility.

Mike Munzing for City Council
Building a Better Aliso Viejo Together

Mike Munzing’s Background

Mike Munzing was selected by his colleagues to serve his third term as Mayor for 2024 and this is his 12th year serving on Aliso Viejo’s city council.

Mike grew up in Orange, Calif. as the youngest of four children and the son of a pastor. He worked full time to put himself through college and holds a BS Degree from California State University, Fullerton with a dual-major in Real Estate Finance and Industrial Marketing.

As a lifelong resident of Orange County, Mike has spent more than 40 years building a successful career in both the commercial real estate and mortgage industries.

In addition to Mike’s duties on Aliso Viejo’s City Council, he previously served as a Director for San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA); as a Regional Council member of Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG); and was an alternate member of the Aliso Creek Watershed.

Mike is also in his 14th year, representing the 73rd Assembly on the Orange County Republican Party’s Central Committee (OCGOP), which covers a large portion of South Orange County, and was asked to join its Executive Board as an Advisor to the Chairman for the past 12 years.

Though Mike has become a familiar face in the local and state political arena, he has maintained his commitment to the local Aliso Viejo community, where he and his wife Erin have lived for 17 years.

Mike Munzing’s Accomplishments on Aliso Viejo’s City Council 2013 – 2024

  • Mike single-handedly stopped the Green City Initiative in 2013, which would have cost the city and its home owners millions of dollars over the years.
  • Mike single-handedly stopped the proposed Boys and Girls Club from being built on the last parcel of the former Moulton Ranch, which allowed for the preservation of the historic buildings on the property and the construction of exciting new buildings and the city created the beautiful new Aliso Viejo Ranch, which can be enjoyed by the entire community.
  • Mike worked closely with OCR to develop an acceptable Open House Sign policy for the city, though I generally opposed even having one. Sadly, there have been some bad players in the city, who were taking advantage of the system. That being said, I don’t believe that the ordinance has ever been enforced.
  • In 2022, with the support of OCR, OCTax and many others, Mike successfully organized the opposition to Measure G, which was a CUSD school bond with a $213,000,000 payback, by the property owners of Aliso Viejo. Mike was the only council member who was in opposition of Measure G.
  • Mikes election to council and his knowledge of the real estate industry, lead to the rezoning of a commercial office site above Town Center, which is now the Northwood Suites by Hilton, as well as the very successful Vantis Apartment project, which was built by Shea.
  • Mike stood strong for the rights of business and property owners, when Edwards Theater wanted to sell beer and wine in their theater. Against strong opposition and months of battling, Mike put the strategy together to finally get them the approval to sell small amounts of beer and wine to movie goers. Against all the accusations, there has never been an issue since giving them the approval.
  • Mike, with the support of David Doyle, created the plan to stop the county from removing the SOCWA bridge, on Awma Road, which saved the city of Aliso Viejo from massive traffic issues and serious safety concerns to the children attending Wood Canyon Elementary School, as well as the residents living off of Wood Canyon Drive. If they had taken down the bridge, then all of the traffic heading to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Park would have been pushed into Aliso Viejo and onto small, unsafe roads that were never designed for that level of traffic.
  • Mike was critical in developing the plan to deal with sober living homes and homeless encampments in Aliso Viejo, through overnight camping bans and mandatory 30-day rental requirements. Both of these issues have been highly curtailed in the city.
  • Aliso Viejo was recently named the 2nd safest city in California & Mike has been well recognized as a strong supporter of law enforcement and public safety.
  • Mike was recently asked to join the Advisory Board of AAPI United, as he is known as a strong supporter of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
